El canopy tour es un legado de la investigación científica al alcance de todos los visitantes al país y lo más parecido a deslizarse, como lo hacen los primates, entre las copas de los árboles.

Los primeros en explorar las copas de los árboles con arneses y cuerdas fueron los científicos hace cerca de medio siglo. Su objetivo era estudiar lo que en ciencia natural se conoce como el dosel del bosque, canopy en inglés, que es donde se encuentra la mayor diversidad biológica de los bosque tropicales.
Y fue así como esta técnica de estudio científico fue adaptada a la actividad turística en los años 90 en Costa Rica y, con tal éxito, que no solo se extendió por todo el territorio nacional en bosques tropicales secos, húmedos y nubosos, cañones de ríos, zonas costeras e inmediaciones de volcanes, sino que también fue exportada a otros países latinoamericanos.
Con el canopy tour, el propósito es deslizarse a toda velocidad por cables entre las copas de los árboles. Estos varían en longitud, pueden medir hasta más de 500 metros, y conectan por medio de plataformas generalmente de madera o metal asidas a enormes árboles, las cuales pueden estar ubicadas incluso a 30 metros sobre el piso del bosque. El impacto en la vegetación es mínimo, lo cual hace esta actividad totalmente compatible con la conservación.
También es segura porque se emplean cables de seguridad, dispositivos de frenado, cascos, guantes y varios guías que están atentos a las condiciones y necesidades de cada persona. Se recomienda vestir ropa deportiva cómoda y zapatos cerrados.
Algunos tours requieren que la persona controle su velocidad deslizando sobre el cable una mano protegida con un guante y que esté atenta a las indicaciones, mientras que en otros se trata solamente de sostener con ambas manos el cable atado a la polea y dejarse ir.

Tiene 11 cables y el más extenso, de 500 metros, representa un recorrido de adrenalina pura en un espacio abierto rodeado de vegetación exuberante y la experiencia más cercana a volar sobre el bosque a toda velocidad.

Canopy tour: A speed adventure through the treetops

The first to explore the treetops with harnesses and ropes were scientists about half a century ago. Their objective was to study what in natural science is known as the forest canopy, which is where the greatest biological diversity of tropical forests is found.
And so it was that this scientific study technique was adapted to the tourist activity in the 1990s in Costa Rica and, with such success, that it not only spread throughout the national territory in dry, humid and cloud tropical forests, river canyons, coastal areas and near volcanoes, but was also exported to other Latin American countries.
With the canopy tour, the purpose is to glide at full speed on cables through the treetops. These vary in length, can measure up to more than 500 meters, and connect by means of platforms generally made of wood or metal attached to huge trees, which can be located even 30 meters above the forest floor. The impact on the vegetation is minimal, which makes this activity totally compatible with conservation.
It is also safe because safety cables, braking devices, helmets, gloves and various guides who are attentive to the conditions and needs of each person are used. It is recommended to wear comfortable sports clothes and closed-toe shoes.
Some tours require the person to control his or her speed by sliding a gloved hand over the cable and to be attentive to the indications, while in others it is just a matter of holding the cable tied to the pulley with both hands and letting go.
Two of the best canopy tour experiences in the country are the canopy adventure in the Hacienda Guachipelin canyon, near the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, and the Tree Top at the El Establo hotel in Monteverde.
The first offers a comprehensive two-hour experience of adventure and lots of adrenaline, combining seven canopy cables, controlled 20-meter rappel, natural rock climbing, hanging bridges and literally swinging like Tarzan from one platform to another, all in a narrow canyon of the Blanco River.
