The area of Tortuguero in Limón is working on promoting the practice of Olympic rowing in Costa Rica with the idea of attracting more tourists interested in this sport while and forming athletes that can represent the country.
Olympic rowing is not something new in the country, Costa Rica has participated with success in tournaments and it won silver medals in the Central American Games. Tortuguero presents ideal conditions for the practice of this sport due to its canals.
“We expect to make of Tortuguero de central base of rowing in Costa Rica, where we can form athletes that will represent us in international event. We are just in the beginning organizational phase, but the community already has three boats that have been lent to us”, explained Henry Chavez, sports promoter who is part of the initiative that is also receiving the support of the National Olympic Committee, the Costa Rican Institute of Sports and Recreation (ICODER), the Ministry of Sports and the Municipality of Pococí.
“We want to involve young people, promote the practice of this sport in Tortuguero with the idea of participating in international competitions in all categories while at the same time attracting a different kind of tourist to the area”, concluded Chaves.
The project also expects to make of Tortuguero an ideal location for international teams to setup their training camps and attract in this way more tourists to the area and help with the local economy and employment opportunities.
A presentation will be held on Saturday, October 26 for the community to get familiar with the initiative.
