March Foundations
Beach Community Church: This organization recently put on an almost impromptu live music show to help raise money for the earthquake victims in Haiti. With an incredible response from local musicians, including Jesse Bishop, and from the community, over $3500 was raised in a single night. This and all future contributions are being donated to World Vision. Lyle Watson, the pastor of the community church, is to be commended for his incredible effort in making this happen in such a short amount of time. Their next mission trip to Nicaragua is 22-27 of this month, to deliver clothing, food, and other aid to the needy in the Manchester area of that country. Interested parties can contact Lyle at lyle@costaricachurch.com.
La Paz Community School: Now in its third year, La Paz offers classes for grades K-9, with 15 percent of the students attending on scholarship. They held their annual fundraiser at the end of January at Flamingo Marina Resort, pulling in $18,000 toward maintaining the school for the upcoming year. The school has a great reputation and track record, with aspirations to add pre-school and tenth grade levels next school year. More information on applications, volunteering, and donations can be found at www.lapazschool.org.
Lifeguards: Considerable improvements have been made since the first Foundations article appeared two months ago. The most important news is that there is now a rotating schedule between the two lifeguard towers on the Playa Tamarindo beaches. Jorge repaired the tower in front of Witch’s Rock and there is now a second tower near the Estuary, as well as the main tower in front of Aqua Discothèque. The Diria Hotel’s surf instructor, Victor, is currently helping out with the Lifeguard Program during the busiest beach days and during outgoing tides. Jorge would like to have new lifeguards certified by the Costa Rican Lifeguard Association but, in order to do this, he needs access to a hotel room in Playa Tamarindo for one full week to administer all the necessary instructions. So, now it is time for the community to participate: if anyone can make this contribution, please contact Cheryl McKillican at: cherylmckillican@hotmail.com. There is another way the community can participate as well: Cheryl is considering selling advertising space on the main lifeguard tower. There are only eight spaces available, going to the first eight businesses who respond. The cost is more than reasonable – only one hundred dollars per space. Interested parties should contact Cheryl at her email address listed above.
Surfrider Foundation: The monthly meeting of Surfrider Foundation will be held on Thursday, 25 March, at 7:00 PM at the Surf Club Sports Bar in Playa Langosta. For all those who would like to participate in keeping the beaches clean, the monthly beach clean-up crew will meet in front of El Diria Hotel on Saturday, 13 March, at 9:00 AM. Also look for information for their big St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser! Direct any questions and input to Mark Clifford at mwcl4d@hotmail.com.
CEPIA: This great organization will celebrate their fifth anniversary with a carnival on Friday, 19 March, at 5:00 PM at the Reserva Conchal Beach Club. Participants can pay a little extra entrance fee for a buffet-style meal. Help CEPIA celebrate a half-decade of offering education to the children of Guanacaste. They need and deserve our support!
