August Detective Shadow
Sadly, the Monkey Bar at Vista Villas has stopped their open mic night on Sunday nights. However, Jesse Bishop & the Banana Kings, who hosted open mike there, will stick around for the Sunday Pool Party every week from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Banana Kings also perform at Witch’s Rock Surf Camp every Saturday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. I don’t know if Jesse has been practicing his chops at home in his spare time, but that guy has been BLAZING on guitar the last few times I’ve seen him…
Jesse’s better half, the much-heralded artist Susan Adams, now shows some of her paintings in The Peanuts Gallery. The Peanuts Gallery is Soledad’s gallery in Edificio Las Olas, located next to Supermercado 2001 at the beginning of the road to Langosta. There will also be a giant flea market in the parking lot on Sunday, August 8th. See you there…
There is a new pharmacy in Tamarindo. Located in Plaza Conchal, it is appropriately called Farmacia Conchal. It is open every day from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the people there are very friendly. It seems like a good place to get your prescription filled, buy some Advil for your headache, or purchase salve for your sunburn.
Tamara Cizek has started selling women’s beauty products from Bath and Body Works, which is an upscale Avon-type of brand. You can see her traversing around town with her son, Samuel, demonstrating the products. You can find the same products in Santa Cruz and Belen from Brenda, who brings them in from the United States.
Thinking about having something sent to you here via FedEx? Think again. A friend of mine who owns a business in Tamarindo had a friend in the States ship him a DVD player via FedEx overnight. The friend paid a little more than one hundred dollars for the shipping. My friend finally received the package four weeks later after meeting with a FedEx representative on no less than four different occasions to sign more and more photocopies, receipts, and dole out his passport information. He also had to pay an additional two hundred dollars, so beware! You could probably FedEx a package quicker to Haiti… Believe it or not, using the regular mail and having the box certified is a lot cheaper and more efficient. That is true for mailing boxes out of Costa Rica as well. Getting the box certified costs around two dollars and expedites the process exponentially.
Tamarindo’s own homegrown rock band The Leatherbacks debuted their much anticipated premiere self-titled album to a packed house at Voodoo Lounge last month. These guys have gotten very tight throughout the years and it was evident as they showcased all their original songs from the CD as well as a couple of crowd-pleasing standards from their repertoire. The album is already selling like hotcakes. Good job, guys.
